52 lakh SIMs disconnected: DoT announces new rules for selling SIM cards

The Department of Telecom (DoT) has introduced new rules to prevent fraudulent sale of SIM cards, following reports of widespread telecom fraud. These rules include registering all 'Point of Sale' (PoS) by September 30 and imposing a penalty of Rs 10 lakh for sale of SIM cards through unregistered dealers. Existing PoS need to submit documents and register by the end of September. The circular also states that if a PoS submits forged documents, the telecom operators must block its ID and re-verify all customers enrolled by the PoS.
